TJR’s “Video Pick of the Week” #1

A classic ’70s commercial announcing GIjOE’s Mobile Support Vehicle. This is a perfect spot. 30 seconds of crisp color photography, inspiring music, great closeups, it’s got it all. Enjoy!

  1. I had to comment on this one. I think the key phrase is towards the end of the spot when the narrator says, “Create your OWN Adventures.” That about says it all to me. That’s what made/makes GIjOEs such great toys. We went out in the backyard and CREATED our own adventures.

  2. They should have had a follow up to this set, where we have to decide if Joe gets cancer or not from hauling a radioactive satellite around with his bare hands, haha.

Love these old commercials, though. There is definitely something charming about the very basic elements of Joe and the Adventure Team in particular. Suddenly your couch could become a mountain that Joe has to climb or that shag rug is a dangerous jungle.

Lots of fun to be had with a GI Joe and a little creativity!

I agree, the Joes that I grew up with were very generic, in that they had no pre-fabricated histories or seperate personalities. We supplied those through the medium of play. With the advent of those little, turd-sized guys in the 80s, much of the imagination was taken out of the equation, and children were duped into thinking that their playthings had to have an extensive backstory and individual biography to go along with it. Sadly, they’ll never know the fun we had creating our own storylines and adventures.
